A calmer way to read the seaweed
Playa Clara exists to answer one anxious pre-vacation question — “will the beach be covered in seaweed?” — honestly and at a glance. We pull the scattered signals into one daily read so you can plan with less dread and more confidence.
Why we built it
Sargassum turned beach planning into a guessing game. Forecasts live on academic dashboards, conditions live in scattered Facebook groups, and cams are buried on hotel sites. Meanwhile the coast is wildly uneven — one beach can be buried while another an hour away is pristine, and it changes by the morning.
Instead of one more panic-inducing headline, we wanted a tool you’d actually check the way you check the weather: a plain rating for every beach, a short outlook, and a straight answer about where to go today.
Three ratings, no jargon
Minimal
Clear water to light traces. Great beach day.
Moderate
Noticeable seaweed. Cleaned resort stretches and mornings are usually fine.
Heavy
Significant accumulation likely. Have a plan-B beach ready.
Ratings are a human read of the combined signals below — not an automated score. When beaches within a destination differ, we rate the overall picture and call out the clear pockets on the beach page.
Where the data comes from
No single feed captures sargassum. We combine four:

Satellite imagery and Atlantic-wide bloom bulletins that show where sargassum is massing offshore.

Quintana Roo daily monitoring maps
The state’s color-coded beach maps, updated through peak season by local networks and municipalities.

Live public beach cams
Hotel and municipal streams we check each morning to confirm what’s actually on the sand right now.

Traveler reports
On-the-ground photos and notes submitted through the site and reviewed before publishing.
How often it updates
Beach ratings are reviewed every morning through peak season (roughly April–October) and less frequently in the quiet months. Each beach page shows when it was last checked. Sargassum is genuinely unpredictable more than a week or two out, so our outlook is deliberately conservative — a planning nudge, never a guarantee.
Independence & how we stay free
Ratings are never for sale. To keep the tool free we earn commissions when you book hotels, tours, or travel insurance through some of our links, and resorts can sponsor clearly-labeled placements — but none of that changes a beach’s rating. A red beach stays red even if a sponsor would prefer otherwise. That independence is the only reason the ratings are worth reading.
Our promise: conditions first, always. If we ever can’t verify a beach, we’ll say so rather than guess.
